  • CST 5223 - Christian Theology


    3 Credits
    This course will approach Christian Theology through a study of scripture and church history in order to prepare the student for ministry. Ordination/Consecration work is embedded in this course for the C&MA with a special emphasis on ecclesiology and eschatology.

  
  • CST 5224 - History of the Church


    3 Credits
    This course presents an overview of the church’s history from the apostolic age to the present, focusing on key preachers and leaders, as well as missions and renewal movements over the past two thousand years. Students will explore the development of Christian doctrine, key spiritual leaders and themes of spiritual formation, as well as lessons of leadership that can be applied today. Students will also investigate the emergence of the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant branches of the Church, studying both the commonality and differences among these branches.

  
  • CST 5227 - Interpreting Old Testament Narratives


    3 Credits
    A study of the methodology used in Hebrew narratives through a detailed examination of the David narrative in I and II Samuel with application to teaching and preaching. (Also BBL 5227 )

  
  • CST 5229 - Strategic Church Revitalization


    3 Credits
    This course introduces students to a process designed to catalyze renewal in organizations experiencing plateau or decline by exploring tools, environments, and relationships. Students will apply the principles that they learn by evaluating leaders and developing clarity, focus, accountability, measurable progress and evaluation as core disciplines of leadership for their particular ministry setting in a practical final project.   • CST 5230 - Personal Study in Spiritual Formation


    3 Credits
    This course involves an individually designed pursuit of spiritual formation encompassing reflective analysis, in-depth study, practice and reflection on a specific dimension, issue, problem or question in spiritual formation and development. Students desiring to pursue this course should dialogue with their academic advisor and/or the department chair so that they are prepared to submit a research proposal during the early weeks of this course. 

  
  • CST 5234 - Theology of Missions and Outreach


    3 Credits
    This course is a study of the theology of evangelism, missions, and the eternal destiny of humankind. In addition, contemporary and global issues in the theology of missions and outreach will be considered. The theological foundation established through this study will form a basis for developing a theologically-motivated philosophy of ministry that has a clear goal of impacting the unreached peoples of the world.

  
  • CST 5235 - Theology of Christ and the Church


    3 Credits
    This course provides a systematic survey and analysis of Christology, soteriology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. Students also complete a theological analysis of a topic related to the centrality of Christ in the Church. While a variety of theological perspectives are considered, special attention is given to these topics from the standpoint of the Christian Missionary Alliance.

  
  • CST 5238 - Jesus and Apologetics


    3 Credits
    This is an apologetics class focusing specifically on the topic of Jesus and the Gospels. The class is intended to help the student be better prepared to give an answer for the multitude of challenges concerning Jesus and the Gospels. Fulfills the New Testament elective, BBL elective or philosophy elective for Master of Divinity (M.Div.) . (Also BBL 5238 )

  
  • CST 5310 - Jesus & Gospel Literature


    3 Credits
    An examination of the diverse approaches to the study of the Gospels with special emphasis on understanding the unique themes, message, and content of each Gospel. In addition, critical issues related to the life of Christ and the Gospel literature will be considered. (Also BBL 5310 )

  
  • CST 5339 - Tactics of Spiritual Warfare


    3 Credits
    This course a Scriptural approach to sound theology and tactics to overcome evil in any ministry setting.  Special topics addressed will be the authority of believers, our identity in Christ, the importance of prayer to combat spiritual beings, truth encounters and the relationship of spiritual warfare to effective disciple-making.

  
  • CST 5340 - Contemporary Theological Issues


    3 Credits
    A survey of key theologians, movements, and issues in contemporary theology introduced by a brief historical overview of nineteenth and twentieth century modern theology. This course aims at developing theological insight and discernment by acquainting students with a variety of modern and postmodern trends in contemporary religious thought.

    This course is designed to equip individuals and church leaders with a theological practical foundation for leading worshipers to know and encounter Christ through worship. Special attention given to New Testament practices and their relevance to contemporary congregations and church leadership.

  
  • CST 5344 - Spiritual Classics


    3 Credits
    The spiritual concepts, principles, and truths in the writings of those who have gone before us in the pursuit of Christ comprise a vital dimension of our spiritual heritage as Christ’s followers. They keep us in touch with experiences in spirituality we will encounter. Becoming acquainted and conversant in them, positions us to engage in meaningful conversations with Jesus’ followers from other spiritual heritages and traditions.

  
  • CST 5890 - Independent Study


    1-3 Credits
    This course is an intensive, supervised investigation of a topic in Christian Studies by an individual student. Enrollment and topic selection are by permission of the instructor and department chair.

  
  • CST 6210 - Theology of Leadership, Vocation and Work


    3 Credits
    This course is a study of the theology of leadership, vocation, and work as they relate to providing leadership in diverse ministry contexts. Students will be prepared to reflect biblically and theologically on leadership, vocation, and work in order to make wise personal decisions and to help others understand the relationship between work, ministry, and service in the Kingdom of God.

  
  • CST 6212 - Hermeneutics & Theological Research


    3 Credits
    This course examines a variety of methods of Biblical interpretation and equips students with the skills necessary for using essential Bible study resources. In addition to applying sound exegetical principles to the Biblical text, students learn how to conduct theological research and write theological research papers.

  
  • CST 6214 - Historical Theology


    3 Credits
    An introduction to historical theology and a survey of the development of the theological formulations of the church through patristic, medieval, reformation, and modern church history. Special emphasis will be placed on “challenges to orthodoxy” and the role of such events played in the church’s responses.

  
  • CST 6216 - History & Theology of Christian Ministry


    3 Credits
    The nature of disciple-making ministry is studied from both the theological and historical perspectives as a basis for understanding biblical standards and models for ministry, historical influences on ministry and the role of the leader in present day ministry.

  
  • CST 6218 - Biblical Theology


    3 Credits
    A study of major themes and doctrines contained in the Old and New Testaments. This course emphasizes the contributions of the various biblical books to the unity of the Old and New Testaments and examines the historical and theological milieu influencing Old and New Testament writings.

  
  • CST 6320 - Luke/Acts: Mission of Christ and the Church


    3 Credits
    A study of the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts, to understand the life of Christ and the early New Testament church from the perspective of Luke as a historian and a theologian, especially as they relate to the mission of Christ and the Church. This course functions as a capstone course in which skills in hermeneutics and theological inquiry are combined with skills in social and cultural analysis to interpret and apply Luke’s message to the contemporary church.   • DEM 2010 - Basic Emergency Medical Technician


    4 Credits
    This course delivers the National EMS Educational Standards adopted by the state of Minnesota for Emergency Medical Technician education requirements. This course meets the needs of the entry-level Emergency Medical Technician. Completion of the EMT course prepares the student for the National Registry of EMT examination. Successful completion of the National Registry exam is recognized by the state of Minnesota to generate the state certification required to work and volunteer as an EMT in Minnesota. (The National Registry of EMT Examination testing requires a minimum age of 18.) Satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading.

  
  • DEM 3040 - Downed Pilot Survival


    3 Credits
    Students will know and understand the key components of survival in a mock aircraft accident and then navigate their way back to safety and/or contact through emergency channels to receive assistance. (Also AVI 3040 )

  
  • DEM 3508 - Introduction to Emergency Management


    3 Credits
    This course focuses on the principles and practices of emergency management at the local, state, and national levels and will explore the concepts of preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. Discussion will include a number of case studies of actual disasters, the challenges that emergency management at all levels of government faced, best practice analysis of what went well and lessons learned for the future.

    Prerequisite: HIS 2510 - American Government  recommended

  
  • DEM 3512 - Crisis and Risk Communication


    3 Credits
    This course examines communications that seek to inform different audiences of particular hazards to which they are exposed and the source of their vulnerability, as well as the methods for identifying and communicating appropriate solutions to the target audience(s).It will address the various interactions that may be required between emergency management officials and a full spectrum of relevant stakeholders, including the emergency services and other responding or responsible agencies, the general and disaster impacted public, the private and NGO sectors, mutual aid partners and other neighboring jurisdictions, the media, and many others.   • DEM 3515 - Emergency Preparedness and Planning


    3 Credits
    This course explores the needs of public safety officials who have responsibility for emergency preparedness planning and response. It includes contexts for emergency planning, legal and jurisdictional; responsibility for planning and responding to emergencies; different types of emergencies, and an approach to planning that can be applied to emergency situations. It addresses specific issues associated with the planning process, including the role of the manager, the necessity for multi-agency involvement, various analytical techniques employed in planning, different levels of emergency planning, and different elements of the plan.

  • DEM 4510 - Disaster Response, Recovery and Operations Management


    3 Credits
    This course examines a theoretical and practical application of post-disaster management activities including human behavior in emergency situations, warning, evacuation, sheltering, triage, damage assessment, disaster declaration, debris removal, media relations, crisis counseling, individual and public assistance, fiscal responsibilities and other relevant functions. Decision making, incident command, EOC operations, coordination and service will be examined.

  • DEM 4511 - Political and Policy Basis of Emergency Management


    3 Credits
    This course introduces concepts and basic descriptive information about the political system within the context of disaster policy and explores how political factors play a role in all phases of emergency management, regardless of the type or nature of the disaster event.

  • DEM 4514 - Emergency Relief and Community Development


    3 Credits
    This course examines Christian perspectives on relief and development and the unique ways that Christian organizations are impacting societies around the globe. This is an interdisciplinary course examining theological perspectives on natural disasters, poverty, and justice as well as the sociological and cultural factors influencing sustainability and community transformation.   • DEM 4518 - Principles and Practice of Hazards Mitigation


    3 Credits
    This course explores natural and man-made hazard mitigation and its role in disaster management; structural versus non-structural actions; the role of the natural environment in mitigating natural hazards; and the role of prevention/preparedness in reducing the impacts of future terrorism events.

    The Internship course is designed to allow senior level students majoring in Disaster and Emergency Management the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge of the discipline in an occupational setting. Internships are completed in community based or governmental organizations. Students are required to work under qualified supervision and must complete various assignments to help them process the experience. Satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading only.

    A study of the philosophy, objectives, administration, and leadership of camp ministry with attention given to developing camping skills, curriculum development, program planning, and counseling. All students will be expected to spend two weekends on a group camping experience.

  
  • DSC 336 - Dynamics of Small Groups

    SPRING

    Integrates biblical directives with small group dynamics, emphasizing ministry within a relational model of the group. This course aims to develop skills and attitudes for both leadership and participation. Students will participate in a small group process throughout the course.

    This class is designed to help students to understand the educational theory behind the most effective practices of teaching the Bible to people of all age groups. Students will learn to design their own Bible lessons based on thorough Bible study and good educational theory. Each student will be expected to design and teach at least four Bible study lessons in a ministry of their choice during the semester.

    This course studies the multifaceted issues related to the development of faith in adolescents. Recent research in brain development will be investigated along with other research related to how adolescents learn, grow, and develop into mature disciples of Jesus Christ.

    This class will study both the theory and practice of mentoring. Students will gain a broadened historical and biblical perspective on the value and uses of mentoring in a wide variety of contexts. Students will gain skill in mentoring others and in learning through a mentoring relationship.

    SPRING

    A practitioner-oriented exploration of ministry in the urban context. Students will participate in ethnographic research, and articulate holistic integrated approaches to youth and family ministry in population centers. Special attention is given to the development of authentic partnerships with indigenous leadership. Fee.

  • DSP 210 - Destination Serve Trip and Reflection


    0 Credits
    ARR

    Students will complete a Destination Serve Trip with Crown College. The student will follow the Destination Serve Trip protocol including all pre-trip and post-trip meetings, afterwards submitting a reflection of their experience focused on personal growth. This course prepares the student in becoming globally engaged and can be satisfied by a variety of experiences aligned with either their personal or professional growth.

  • ECE 320 - Development of Young Children


    3 Credits
    SPRING

    Principles and theories of early childhood development and learning are studied. Focus is on a holistic view of development, prenatal through childhood, with emphasis on major developmental domains: cognitive, social/emotional, physical, creative, and moral/spiritual. Strategies for assessing young children are explored. Consideration is given to the adult’s role in supporting the development and learning of young children.

  • ECE 331 - Preprimary Curriculum and Methods

    FALL

    This course provides the theoretical and practical framework for implementing developmentally appropriate practice for children ages three to five. Learning experiences and curriculum development focuses on integrating cognitive, social, emotional, physical, creative and moral/spiritual domains and establishing and maintaining a physically and psychologically safe and healthy learning environment. Field experience in approved site is required.

  • ECE 331P - Preprimary School Practicum

    FALL

    This experience provides an opportunity for students to gain understanding and skills needed to teach preprimary children. Students will observe and apply the theory and skills they have developed in the college classroom to practical situations in a preprimary learning environment. Students will complete assignments required by the course under the supervision of the cooperating teacher. Cooperating teachers complete an evaluation of performance. The 15-hour practicum experience is carried out with child contact in the preprimary school or daycare-learning environment with a teacher present who has current MN Board of Teaching Education licensure in Pre-K, ECFE or Early Childhood Special Education.

  • ECE 340 - Principles of Early Childhood

    The purpose of this course is to explore the cognitive development of children in a culturally diverse society. Students will explore foundational theory of early childhood education, cognitive development domain, and developmentally appropriate instructional practices. Emphasis is given to the characteristics of a balanced literature-rich, integrated program that integrates the communication arts with beginning content concepts. Students will investigate the role of the teacher in the development of cognitive processes and guiding Christian principles. Students will learn to plan and assess learning in all classrooms designed for children birth through grade three.

    The continuation of ECO 232  dealing specifically with the study of microeconomics and additional advanced economic topics. Biblical principles and ethical implications will be addressed. Not to be taken in addition to ECO 332 .

  • ECO 331 - Principles of Macroeconomics


    3 Credits
    An introductory course in the fundamental principles governing production, distribution, consumption, and exchange of wealth - dealing specifically with macroeconomics. Consideration will be given to national income, money and banking, including the role of government with respect to fiscal and monetary policies. Biblical principles and ethical implications will be addressed. Not to be taken in addition to ECO 232  or ECO 3031 .

  • ECO 3031 - Economics in Business


    3 Credits
    A survey of the role of economics in business focusing on how market economies operate including supply and demand, elasticity, market efficiencies and failures, externalities, and the behavior of the firm in the market. An overview of the business cycle will be addressed along with inflation, unemployment, and economic growth.

    A study of a broad range of literature for pre-adolescents and young adults from middle school through high school age.   • EDU 241 - Foundations of Education

    A survey of information from the fields of history, philosophy, and sociology that is relevant to the understanding of teaching as a profession and a Christian calling, the school as an institution, and contemporary educational issues. Current standards for entry into the teaching profession and expectations of Crown College’s performance-based program are included. Evaluated field experience is required and is considered part of the student’s candidacy for acceptance into the Teacher Education Department.     As a requirement of the Foundations of Education course (EDU 241 ), students complete a sixteen-hour field experience in a regular school setting. This practical component consists of classroom observation, tutoring individuals or small groups of students and assisting the classroom teacher in other appropriate ways. Cooperating teachers complete an evaluation of performance and teaching potential. This experience concentrates on students exploring their interest in the teaching profession.     This course provides an understanding of diverse learners including: exceptional students, English language learners, and those from diverse cultures. The course will explore the challenges to learning, literacy, testing, and social issues for these learners, as well as educational law, parent rights, and roles within the community of learners. Practical strategies for working with diverse learners will be emphasized. Sixteen clock hours of field experience at a school site are required.

    The focus of this course is on educational measurement, assessment, and evaluation. The course will outline procedures for designing and selecting, administering, and interpreting a variety of informal assessment measures as well as standardized, formal assessments. A variety of evaluation techniques will be examined including authentic performance assessments. Students will develop, analyze, and interpret assessments as it relates to student learning.

  • EDU 350 - Literacy Across the Curriculum

    This course provides an integrated model of literacy using a constructivist approach. Students learn the basic knowledge associated with teaching literacy across the curriculum in the K-12 world. This course will specifically address the 5 components of language arts (reading- fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary, writing, listening, speaking/presenting and visual literacy) and the process of learning each component. Also addressed will be those students who are not progressing at an average rate through the components. RtI and other intervention methods will be introduced and discussed along with strategies for enhancement of literacy instruction in content areas. Literacy assessments at all levels will be explored and practiced during this course.

  • EED 342 - Elementary Math Concepts and Methods

    This elementary math methods course centers on children’s thinking in mathematics and classroom practices that extend children’s thinking. Based on groundbreaking research from the Rational Number Project and Cognitively Guided Instruction, this course will develop pre-service teachers’ frameworks for assessing children’s math content knowledge and then applying pedagogical content knowledge to develop elementary students’ abilities to implement problem solving strategies. This course integrates elementary math content with elementary math methods to enhance elementary students’ understanding of rational numbers, pre-algebra, geometry, data analysis, and fractions. Pre-service teachers will leave this class with specific instruments for helping elementary students construct for themselves meaningful interpretations of mathematical ideas.

    This course explores the methods, materials and techniques of teaching science, health and physical education in the K-6 classroom with a focus on instructional strategies for teaching science as a means for achieving scientific literacy, as well as surveying health and physical education content, theories and practices for developing and assessing health and physical education curriculum that promotes healthy lifestyles. NASPE and NESE standards will be explored including History and Nature of Science, Science as Inquiry, Science and Technology, Science in Personal and Social Perspectives. Coursework is connected to the practicum experience (EED 360P ) as students develop projects, lessons, and assessments for use in their required field experience in an approved site.
