Linguistics Major (B.A.)


The Linguistics major prepares individuals to serve as translators in a variety of capacities. Included in this are such areas as surveying cultural groups to determine a translation strategy, Bible translation, and translation of Christian materials.

Program Requirements


I. Christian Studies - 30 Credits


II. General Education - 39 Credits


Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) courses:


First Course Set:


  • Introduction to Sociolinguistics 1 Credits
  • Articulatory Phonetics 2 Credits
  • Second Language Acquisition or Semantics and Pragmatics 3 Credits
  • Syntax and Morphology 4 Credits

Second Course Set:


  • Phonology I 3 Credits
  • Courses approved by SIL director 4 Credits

Note:


SIL courses are offered at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks (North Dakota SIL) and Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Oregon. Credit and dates vary with locations; see SIL catalog for details. Normally the courses will be completed over two summers. Participants are encouraged to take the first course set after their sophomore year. The practicum takes place on site with Wycliffe Bible Translators and occurs after the junior year. During the summer immediately following graduation the second course set is taken. Graduation is not official until all requirements are satisfactorily fulfilled. Students interested in the literacy track are to take the literacy mega course (9 credits).

* Some courses from the Christian Studies Core and Major Core can be used to fulfill requirements in the General Education Core. By doing that the number of electives needed would increase so that the minimum of 125 credits is reached.

Departmental Acceptance


Students apply for departmental acceptance during their sophomore year spring semester or their junior year fall semester. A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and completion of half of the Christian Service requirements are required for departmental admission in the Linguistics major.

In conjunction with this program, students will complete 17 semester hours at one of the Summer Institute of Linguistics sites in North Dakota or Oregon. The course sets are offered over two summers. The first course set can be taken after the freshman and/or sophomore years. The Intercultural Practicum occurs the summer after the first course set (working on-site with a Wycliffe Bible translator for seven weeks). The final course set can be taken after the junior year or immediately following graduation.
