Social Studies Education Major (B.S.)

The Social Studies education major is designed for students who anticipate a teaching career in secondary education or middle school. This program is planned to meet Minnesota’s requirements for the Social Studies teaching license, grades 5–12. The student must be accepted into both the Humanities and Social Science Department and the Teacher Education Department and meet all the requirements in both departments.

Program Requirements

I. Christian Studies - 30 Credits

II. General Education - 38 Credits

Total - 134-149 Credits

1 Select humanities electives from COM, ENG, ESL, FAR, HIS, HUM, LAN, MUS, PHI, or PRC. EDU 240X - Adolescent Literature  counts as Humanities Elective for students with Middle School Minors.

2 Select social science electives from ANT, CSJ, ECO, ESL, GEO, HIS, POL, PSY, or SOC.

4 Fine arts courses include music, art, drama, and dance. COM 328  and COM 446  also qualify as fine arts electives. (Only three credits of music organizations and/or lessons can be counted toward humanities/fine arts requirements.)

* Some courses from the Christian Studies Core and Major Core can be used to fulfill requirements in the General Education Core. By doing that the number of credits needed for graduation would be toward the lower end of the range of total credits.

^ Requires a minimum passing grade of a “C”.

Note: Student teaching is eligible for a Christian Service unit.

This program is subject to change based on the Minnesota State Board of Teaching licensing revisions.
