Elementary Education Major (B.S.)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Arts & Sciences Academic Programs

The Elementary Education major is designed to prepare students for a public and private teaching career in grades K-6. The program is structured to meet the Minnesota Board of Teaching Elementary Education licensure requirements. Students interested in an Elementary Education major without a minor must have prior approval from the Teacher Education Department. The student must be accepted into the Teacher Education Department and meet all of the requirements.

Program Requirements

I. Christian Studies - 24 Credits

II. General Education - 30 Credits

A. Middle School Communication Arts & Literature Minor - 19 Credits

C. Middle School Science Minor - 18-19 Credits

F. Elementary Education K-6 Only - 16 Credits

Students who want to pursue the K-6 Elementary Education license only must receive approval from the Teacher Education department.

Total - 125-129 Credits

1 Select humanities electives from COM, ENG, FAR, HIS, HUM, LAN, MUS, PHI, or PRC.

2 Select social science electives from ANT, CSJ, ECO, GEO, HIS, POL, PSY, or SOC.

3 Select fine arts electives from FAR and MUS. (Only three credits of music organizations and/or lessons can be counted toward humanities/fine arts requirements.)

* Some courses from the Christian Studies Core and Major Core can be used to fulfill requirements in the General Education Core. By doing that the number of credits needed for graduation would be toward the lower end of the range of total credits.

^ Requires a minimum passing grade of a “C”.

Note: Student teaching is eligible for a service credit.

This program is subject to change based on the Minnesota State Board of Teaching licensing revisions.
