Return to: Arts & Sciences Academic Programs
The Elementary Education major is designed to prepare students for a public and private teaching career in grades K-6. The program is structured to meet the Minnesota Board of Teaching Elementary Education licensure requirements. The student will choose either a Middle School Endorsement in Communication Arts, Math, Science or Social Studies in 5th through 8th grade or a Preprimary Endorsement for age 3 to Kindergarten. Students interested in an Elementary Education licensure without an endorsement must have prior approval from the Teacher Education Department. Students must also have a bachelor’s degree before they are approved to pursue an Elementary Education licensure only program. The student must be accepted into the Teacher Education Department and meet all of the requirements.

Licensure Requirements
All persons completing approved teacher education programs in Minnesota institutions and seeking initial teaching licensures are required to successfully complete the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Examinations (MTLE) Basic Skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Students must take this exam prior to department acceptance. Students are also required to pass the MTLE pedagogy and content area tests to be eligible for licensure.
The State of Minnesota requires a background check of all persons seeking teacher licensure upon completion of the preparation program and prior to issuing the teaching licensure. A criminal record does not automatically disqualify a candidate from licensure, but candidates must consider whether their backgrounds would jeopardize receiving licensure approval. Additional information may be required by the Board of Teaching to determine whether or not to grant the license.
