Individualized Emphasis

This emphasis is offered through the School of Liberal Arts + Education. It allows students to pursue an area of individual interest while maintaining academic focus. If standard program offerings do not sufficiently satisfy students’ academic goals, students may petition to add an individualized emphasis. Students must present a reasoned argument for the individualized emphasis. The emphasis courses must have a coherent theme and students must explain how the emphasis helps to achieve academic goals otherwise unavailable. The emphasis will appear in student records as Individualized Emphasis and will not specify the focus of the emphasis.

1. Students must propose 9 credits (usually 3 courses) for the emphasis.
2. At least 6 of these credits must not have been completed before the petition is submitted.
3. At least 6 of these credits must be upper division (300-400).
4. The proposed courses must be letter graded (A-F).
5. The academic advisor must approve the emphasis.
6. The Humanities & Social Science department chair must approve the emphasis.
7. The Dean of Liberal Arts + Education must approve the emphasis.
