The Elementary Education major is designed to prepare students for a public and private teaching career in grades K-6. The program is structured to meet the Minnesota Board of Teaching Elementary Education licensure requirements. Students interested in an Elementary Education major without a minor must have prior approval from the Teacher Education Department. The student must be accepted into the Teacher Education Department and meet all of the requirements.

Program Requirements

III. Elementary Education Major - 70-71 Credits

All major core classes and education core classes as well as general education English and math classes require a minimum passing grade of a C.

A. Middle School Communication Arts & Literature Minor - 19 Credits

C. Middle School Science Minor - 19 Credits

Students who take a 3 credit science elective may need to take an extra credit of general elective courses to reach the institutional minimum of 125 credits for a baccalaureate degree.

F. Elementary Education K-6 Only - 19 Credits

Students who want to pursue the K-6 Elementary Education license only must receive approval from the Teacher Education department.

Total - 125-126 Credits

A minimum of 36 credits must be at the upper (300-400) level for a bachelor degree.

* Some courses from the Christian Studies Core and Major Core can be used to fulfill requirements in the General Education Core. By doing that the number of electives needed would increase so that the minimum of 125 credits is reached.

1 Interdisciplinary courses in the major core that are cross listed as BIB or THE will fulfill this requirement. Choose Christian Ministry electives from CHM 201 , CHM 211 , CHM 300  or CHM 325 .

2 Select humanities electives from COM, ENG, FAR, HIS, HUM, LAN, MUS, PHI, or PRC.

3 Select social science electives from ANT, CSJ, ECO, GEO, HIS, POL, PSY, or SOC.

4 Select fine arts electives from FAR and MUS. (Only three credits of music organizations and/or lessons can be counted toward humanities/fine arts requirements.)

5 Students who scored high enough on the ACT to petition to waive EDU 209  (consult the teacher education department for more information), may need to take an extra credit of general elective courses to reach the institutional minimum of 125 credits for a baccalaureate degree.

This program is subject to change based on the Minnesota State Board of Teaching licensing revisions.
