Music and World Cultures Major (B.A.)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Departments

The Music and World Cultures degree program brings together elements of the current B.A. degrees in Music and International Studies. This program is designed to equip the next generation of music missionaries, cross-cultural worship leaders, and ethnomusicologists to serve in diverse cultural settings around the world. Over the course of study the student will gain an understanding of ethnic music culture that facilitates the use of indigenous music in cross-cultural communication, ministry, and worship. Emphasis is given to practical leadership through analysis of diverse cultures, intercultural communication and anthropology, combined with a biblical understanding of the church and its mission. Music and World Cultures majors will complete a semester long cross-cultural internship in their area of interest. Crown College is the only college in the Midwest that offers this degree program and only the second one in the nation.

5 Students are required to have 7 semesters of private lessons on their major instruments and must enroll in private lessons on their instrument each semester until their recital.

6 Piano Lab: Students must take Piano Lab their first year and then private instruction for 1 or 0 credits until the piano proficiency level for their program has been met. Entering students who have a proficiency that surpasses Piano Lab may choose to test out of the class and move directly to private instruction.

7 Music and World Cultures majors must have seven (7) satisfactory semesters of Music Hour. Transfer students must complete a Music Hour credit for every semester enrolled in the Music Department at Crown College except during the intercultural practicum. Their final semester, students take MUS 490  instead of MUS 090 .

* Some courses from the Christian Studies Core and Major Core can be used to fulfill requirements in the General Education Core. By doing that the number of electives needed would increase so that the minimum of 125 credits is reached.
