Modern criminal law is based on statutes that prohibit or require certain behavior, and the methods used by local, state, and federal government to enforce cooperation with those statutes. This course teaches students how to read and use criminal statutes and how to understand the definitions and elements of all basic criminal offenses. The Minnesota criminal and traffic codes are the main subject of study, supplemented with state and federal constitutional law and judicial decisions. Students will learn how to apply the criminal law in general practice and in specific scenarios and will compare the United States Code and other sources of criminal enforcement.
