BUS 110 - Business Foundations 3 Credits FALL
This foundational course offers an introduction to the core principles of business for students pursuing degrees within the School of Business. Anchored in a Biblical worldview, the course will examine the three foundational business pillars of leadership, management, and governance. The course will also provide an overview of the main interrelated disciplinary aspects of business, including strategy, operations, finance, accounting, marketing, sales, human resources, and technology that all businesses in any industry rely on for success. This course will help students see the big picture of business, its critical elements and key components, and how those components fit together and work in harmony to achieve organizational health and success with unwavering integrity and human dignity. The course explores Biblical principles and Gospel truths that pertain directly to business, such as servant leadership, stewardship, marketplace realities, and values-based decision-making, each with an emphasis on aligning managerial best practices and effective leadership strategies with Biblical teachings. The course underscores the significance of ethical leadership, accountability and governance by fostering a culture where faith-based principles inform contemporary business practices and become the filter through which to view and navigate adversity. Through a combination of new terminology, conceptual understanding, real-world case studies, and experiential learning, students will develop the language and foundational skills to practically address modern organizational and marketplace challenges. Students will also engage with popular strengths assessment tools to help them better understand their gifts, interests, and natural competencies from a business/career lens. With this perspective, students begin to understand the areas of business that most interest them to help inform their choice of business major and future career path. By leveraging Biblical principles with durable business frameworks, students will become better prepared to lead with purpose and integrity as they contribute significantly and sustainably to their organizations and communities.
