Mission and Vision

In keeping with the purpose statement of The Christian and Missionary Alliance for Alliance education adopted at the 1986 Centennial Council, the Crown College Board of Trustees has issued the following statement and goals:

Mission Statement

The mission of Crown College is to provide a biblically-based education for Christian leadership in The Christian and Missionary Alliance, the church-at-large, and the world.

Vision Statement

Christians prepared to serve and influence the world.

Faith and Learning Integration

As an institution of Christian higher education, Crown College is committed to the integration of faith and learning. Crown seeks a robust model of integration that is Christ-centered and demonstrates loyalty to ultimate truth. This is born out of a humble conviction of God’s interaction with creation and His cooperation in the human learning endeavor. Crown College upholds a deep commitment to Biblical inerrancy and the historical orthodoxy of the Christian tradition while engaging in discipline-specific, Christ-honoring scholarship and practice. 

Institutional Learning Goals

The college seeks to provide an education that is Christ centered, academically excellent and globally connected to undergraduate and graduate students. These values are evident to the extent that Crown College students:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and attitudes appropriate to their fields and levels of studies.
  2. Demonstrate written and oral expression observing the conventions of their discipline.
  3. Integrate a field of study with a Christian perspective.
  4. Illustrate a life of learning enabled with critical thinking skills
  5. Apply ethical principles that are consistent with Biblical values.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for people of diverse cultures.

 

Philosophy of Education

The educational philosophy of Crown College is based upon the conviction that personal faith in Jesus Christ is essential in order to properly understand and experience life through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. The following tenets of educational philosophy come from this conviction:

  1. God is Sovereign Creator, Sustainer, and Consummator of all life, and knowledge must be viewed in proper relationship to God.
  2. Education must be fashioned within the framework of a Christian worldview with its primary purpose to develop a biblical perspective from which individuals can assimilate, synthesize, and respond to situations of life and learning.

A Christian worldview holds that human history is controlled and directed by God toward the accomplishment of His purposes for mankind. Each individual is a part of the program of God and therefore views life with greater meaning and with a greater sense of purpose. Education within this worldview imparts values and moral concepts to help the individual fulfill his or her role in the plan of God.

A Christian worldview believes God personally controls the affairs of mankind and the universe; this contributes to a greater appreciation of all areas of learning. The natural sciences, for example, are enriched by the conviction of a controlling, purposeful intelligence. History is viewed as moving toward a goal. Truth will not be harmed by examination and critical evaluation. Therefore, exposure to conflicting philosophies and ideas is conducive to a deeper appreciation of truth.

Education that does not affect life is incomplete. Crown College seeks to produce people of Christian conviction who can function effectively and contribute globally as ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

Affiliation

Crown College is the Midwest regional college of The Christian and Missionary Alliance, an extensive missionary denomination with a national office in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Alliance was organized in 1887 by Dr. A. B. Simpson, a former Presbyterian clergyman. His purpose was to unite the large number of consecrated Christians in various evangelical churches in Christian fellowship and testimony in order to emphasize the deeper Christian life and engage in vigorous missionary endeavors.

The heart of the Alliance message is best presented in the words of Dr. Simpson:

“Preeminently we are witnesses for Christ. We are glad to testify to Him before we speak of His blessings or gifts to men. It is Christ as a person, as a living reality, as a supreme fact of history and life, Jesus Himself, who is the theme of our testimony. Soon He is to appear in the vivid and glorious revelation of His personal majesty, filling all the earth and heaven, but meanwhile, He is projecting His personality upon the age, upon the heart of His people, and upon our own individual lives, and He wants us to know Him, to represent Him and reveal Him to all men.

“If we are saved, it is Christ who saves us. If we are sanctified, it is Christ who is made unto us sanctification. If we are healed, it is because His life is in us. And the hope of the future is not the glory He is to reveal, but the return of the King Himself, our Beloved and our Friend.”

The Christian and Missionary Alliance is comprised of over 2,000 churches in the United States, supporting both home and overseas ministries with a budget of over $38 million annually. Over 20,000 national workers serve with roughly 1,000 Alliance missionaries, associates, and professionals in 112 countries.

Accreditation and Academic Recognition

Crown College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission (230 South LaSalle St., Suite 7-500, Chicago, IL 60604), Phone: 800-621-7440. Due to this excellent accreditation status, credits and degrees earned at Crown are transferable and recognized by public and private colleges and universities throughout the world.

The College has been accredited by The Higher Learning Commission since 1980. Candidate status was granted in July of 1974. In addition, the College is chartered by the Minnesota Department of Education as a degree-granting institution. Veterans attending Crown College are eligible to use their veterans’ education benefits. The College is authorized under Federal law to enroll non-immigrant alien students.

Crown College is registered with the Minnesota Office of Higher Education pursuant to sections 136A.61 to 136A.71. Registration is not an endorsement of the institution. Crown College is also accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education at the undergraduate level (One Dupont Circle NW, Suite 530, Washington, D.C. 20036-1120 phone: 202.887.6791). The nursing program is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.

Crown College has also received continuing approval from the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) of the Minnesota Department of Education. Its undergraduate Teacher Education programs leading to licensure for preprimary, elementary, and secondary teaching are approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching.

The Crown College Graduate School of Ministry is an associate member of The Association of Theological Schools (ATS).

Statement of Faith

  1. There is one God, who is infinitely perfect, existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  2. Jesus Christ is true God and true man. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died upon the cross, the just for the unjust, as a substitutionary sacrifice, and all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood. He arose from the dead according to the Scriptures. He is now at the right hand of the Majesty on high as our great High Priest. He will come again to establish His Kingdom of righteousness and peace.
  3. The Holy Spirit is a divine person, sent to indwell, guide, teach, and empower the believer, and convince the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment.
  4. The Old and New Testaments, inerrant as originally given, were verbally inspired by God and are a complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men. They constitute the divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice.
  5. Man was originally created in the image and likeness of God; he fell through disobedience, incurring thereby both physical and spiritual death. All men are born with a sinful nature, are separated from the life of God, and can be saved only through the atoning work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The portion of the impenitent and unbelieving is existence forever in conscious torment; and that of the believer, in everlasting joy and bliss.
  6. Salvation has been provided through Jesus Christ for all men; and those who repent and believe in Him are born again of the Holy Spirit, receive the gift of eternal life, and become the children of God.
  7. It is the will of God that each believer should be filled with the Holy Spirit and be sanctified wholly, being separated from sin and the world and fully dedicated to the will of God, thereby receiving power for holy living and effective service. This is both a crisis and a progressive experience wrought in the life of the believer subsequent to conversion.
  8. Provision is made in the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ for the healing of the mortal body. Prayer for the sick and anointing with oil are taught in the Scriptures and are privileges for the Church in this present age.
  9. The Church consists of all those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, are redeemed through His blood, and are born again of the Holy Spirit. Christ is the Head of the Body, the Church, which has been commissioned by Him to go into all the world as a witness, preaching the Gospel to all nations. The local church is a body of believers in Christ who are joined together for the worship of God, for edification through the Word, for prayer, fellowship, the proclamation of the Gospel, and observance of the ordinances of baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
  10. There shall be a bodily resurrection of the just and of the unjust-for the former, a resurrection unto life; for the latter, a resurrection unto judgment.
  11. The second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is imminent and will be personal, visible, and premillennial. This is the believer’s blessed hope and is a vital truth which is an incentive to holy living and faithful service.

Community Covenant

As a body of believers at Crown College, we commit to pursuing truth and learning to serve Christ together. We desire to be a community whose belief and behavior is inextricably intertwined in order that we might reflect the kingdom of God to the world.

“Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31 NLT

Principles and Standards

As a Christ-centered community of growing Christians who desire spiritual transformation and value academic excellence and a globally connected community, Crown College has chosen to adopt the following principles and standards that reinforce and support a biblical worldview and lifestyle. These guidelines are at the heart of who we are as a body of believers. Some of these principles and standards apply to believers in general, and others are particular to Crown College.

Authority of the Word of God - We believe that the Word of God is the inerrant revelation for Christian belief and behavior and is our ultimate authority. By following the Scriptures regarding lifestyle decisions, an individual may discover a life of holiness in relation to God and others.

“Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.” Ephesians 5:10 NLT

The Lordship of Christ and the Spirit-filled Life - We believe that Jesus Christ desires a personal relationship with every individual and invites us to enter into life in Him through the power of the Holy Spirit. We recognize that apart from Christ we can do nothing, and as we surrender to Him, His love will flow through our lives. This personal relationship is fostered by individuals who open themselves to God by practicing various spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, fasting, discipleship, stewardship, accountability, service, fellowship, witnessing, and individual and corporate worship. When we experience God’s transforming power, we will develop personally and flourish as a community. This leads to a life which glorifies Jesus Christ, enriches the believer through the fruit of God’s Spirit, and radically impacts a lost world.

Christian Character and Maturity - We believe God calls us to develop a healthy lifestyle that balances the spiritual, emotional, social, physical, and intellectual dimensions of who we are. All of these areas are integral parts of the curricular and co-curricular experience at Crown College.

The Bible describes character qualities that should be present in the lives of believers. These include love, joy, kindness, peace, patience, humility, compassion, forgiveness, hospitality, integrity, self-control, generosity, care for the oppressed, commitment to justice, and the recognition of the rights and needs of others. We believe that these characteristics are fully developed only through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.

The Word of God also identifies character qualities and actions that should not be present in the lives of believers such as abusive anger; malice; jealousy; lust; sexually immoral behavior including premarital sex, adultery, and homosexuality; impure desires; prejudice based on race, sex, or socioeconomic status; greed; idolatry; slander; profanity; lying; drunkenness; thievery; and dishonesty. According to Scripture, these qualities are not acceptable for the Christian, and therefore, are unacceptable for members of the Crown College community. We need the transforming power of Christ for change to take place in these areas. The guiding principle for these choices comes from Philippians 4:8, “…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.” Specific guidelines and standards of conduct are found in the Student and Employee Handbooks.

Conclusions About Community Life

As such, we commit to the principles and standards of the Community Covenant and the expectations outlined in the Student and Employee handbooks in order to maintain the spirit and health of the community. These principles and policies are binding for all who voluntarily choose to become part of the Crown College Community as representatives on the Board of Trustees, employees who minister and serve on behalf of Crown College, and undergraduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Recognizing that we have an obligation to hold each other accountable to biblical standards and to the commitments we have made, appropriate action will be taken to teach, influence, reconcile, discipline, or even dismiss those who disregard these community expectations. If some find themselves unable to honor these commitments, withdrawal may be in order. We will strive to have all disciplinary procedures characterized by Christian love. This Community Covenant is subject to change only by action of the Board of Trustees.

About our Campus

Crown College is located west of the Minneapolis suburbs and consists of a large central building, seven residence halls, and six apartment buildings for students and for families. The College enjoys the quiet beauty of a suburban setting while providing easy access to the metropolitan Twin Cities. The rolling hills and lakeside setting offer a serenity well suited for academic endeavor. The variety and beauty of the Minnesota seasons enhances the location.

Built in 1959-60, the large, cross-shaped main building houses most academic, recreational and administrative facilities of the institution (including the library, chapel, campus store, athletic facility, residence hall, administrative offices, dining facilities, Life Fitness Center, Simpson Auditorium and classrooms).

Residence Halls (Arts & Sciences Students)

Strohm and Richardson Halls provide housing for men. A large central lounge, kitchen, and laundry facility are available in each hall. Rooms fit four students and include a private bath. 

Tewinkel and Weldin Halls house primarily upperclassmen students in suite-style rooms. Each suite consists of a living room, bathroom, and three double bedrooms. A lounge and laundry facilities are provided on each floor, plus one common kitchen in each residence hall. 

Built in 2023, SPBI Hall provides housing for women in suite-style rooms. Each suite consists of a lounge space, bathroom, and three double bedrooms. Lounge, study rooms and laundry facilities are provided on each floor.  

Faith Village

Six buildings (54 apartments) known as Faith Village include Brown, Conley, Hindmand, Gates, Jones, and Tanner Halls offering one, two, and three bedroom apartments for resident single students as well as those with families. Laundry and playground facilities are available in Faith Village. This is available to students in the School of Arts & Sciences.

Disability Access

Although the building was built prior to the passage of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Crown College is well suited to serve the needs of disabled individuals. The main building allows access to all basic student services and student life activities under one roof. Residence living offers the option of barrier-free rooms with a private bath.

These disclosures, which are available at www.crown.edu/consumerinfo, provide specific information to comply with the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), as amended by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA). The disclosures provided at this website include (but are not limited to): specific student rights regarding education records and directory information under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); information about financial aid, educational programs, accreditation, copyright infringement policies and sanctions, student loan information, campus safety, annual campus safety security reports, federal requirements for return of funds, institutional statistics such as completion, graduation and transfer out rates. Counseling Program Disclosures

Crown College’s counseling degrees are designed to prepare students for licensure in their state in Alcohol and Drug (Addictions) Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or both. However, each state sets their own education requirements for types and levels of licensure. The chart below can be used to help determine whether Crown’s program is expected to fulfill the requirements of each state. The top row represents the degree (Associate of Science, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts Emphasis, and Master of Arts). Find the state where licensure is desired and the corresponding degree to determine whether Crown’s program is expected to reach the minimum requirements for licensure in that state or Crown’s program is not expected to reach the minimum requirements. Note that a few states require additional courses (typically state specific courses that must be taken in that state) for licensure. While Crown works to keep the chart current and accurate, students are advised to check with their state licensing board regarding the specific requirements for education in their state for professional counseling or addictions counseling, or both.
