Science Education Major (B.S.)

The Science Education major is designed for students who anticipate a teaching career in secondary education or middle school. This program is planned to meet Minnesota’s requirements for the Science teaching licenses of Life Science (9-12) and General Science (5-8). The student must be accepted into both the Math and Science Department and the Teacher Education Department and meet all the requirements in both departments. To qualify for both the Life Science license (9-12) and the General Science license (5-8), the student must successfully complete the MTLE in both content areas.

Program Requirements


I. Christian Studies - 30 Credits


II. General Education - 38 Credits


Total - 136-152 Credits


1 Select humanities electives from COM, ENG, ESL, FAR, HIS, HUM, LAN, MUS, PHI, or PRC. EDU 240X - Adolescent Literature  counts as Humanities Elective for students with Middle School Minors.

2 Select social science electives from ANT, CSJ, ECO, ESL, GEO, HIS, POL, PSY, or SOC.

* Some courses from the Christian Studies Core and Major Core can be used to fulfill requirements in the General Education Core. By doing that the number of credits needed for graduation would be toward the lower end of the range of total credits.

^ Requires a minimum passing grade of a “C”.

Note: Student teaching is eligible for a Christian Service unit.

This program is subject to change based on the Minnesota State Board of Teaching licensing revisions.

Departmental Acceptance


Students apply for departmental acceptance during their sophomore year spring semester or their junior year fall semester. A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA and completion of half of the Christian Service requirements are required for departmental admission in the Life Science Education major. Student must apply and be accepted into both the Teacher Education Department and Mathematics and Science Department.
